What is Botox, and how does it work?
Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin, a neurotoxin generated by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected into muscles, Botox inhibits nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. This process helps to relax the muscles and diminish the appearance of wrinkles.
What can Botox treat?
Botox is most commonly used to treat wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes (crow's feet). It can also be used to treat other conditions, such as:
Frown lines
Forehead wrinkles
Crow's feet
Bunny lines (wrinkles on the nose)
Marionette lines (lines that run from the corners of the mouth to the chin)
Chin dimples
Excessive sweating
Migraines
TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction)
What to expect during a Botox treatment
A Botox treatment is a quick and relatively painless procedure. The injections only take a few minutes to complete. You may experience some mild discomfort during the injections, but this is usually temporary.
Results of Botox
The results of Botox are typically visible within a few days of treatment. The full effects may not be apparent for up to two weeks. The results of Botox typically last for three to six months.
Risks of Botox
Botox is a safe and effective treatment when performed by a qualified and experienced injector. However, there are some potential risks associated with Botox, such as:
Bruising
Swelling
Headache
Nausea
Muscle weakness
Droopy eyelid
Dry eye
Is Botox right for you?
If you are considering Botox, it is important to book a consultation with one of our Registered Nurses to see if it is right for you. Botox is not right for everyone. You should not get Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a neuromuscular disorder, or are allergic to botulinum toxin.
